“What is my achievement is who I choose to be.”
Spiritual Friction | Episode 21
What if our greatest achievement isn't what we accomplish, but who we choose to become?
In Episode 21 of Spiritual Friction, I'm joined by BE, inventor of The Alinker, author of Inventing BE, and a certified Bio-Tuning practitioner.
BE has spent much of her life questioning the systems, expectations, and beliefs that shape how we see ourselves and one another. From designing a walking bike that challenges traditional ideas about mobility to building schools in Afghanistan, her experiences offer a different perspective on what it means to live with intention.
At the heart of our conversation is a question that I think many of us can relate to:
How much of who we believe ourselves to be has been shaped by what we've been told?
We Are More Than Our Circumstances
One of the things that stood out to me during our conversation was BE's perspective on identity.
“What is my achievement is who I choose to be.”
So often, we define ourselves through our experiences, accomplishments, struggles, or the roles we've learned to occupy.
But our circumstances are not the entirety of who we are.
BE's work with The Alinker reflects this philosophy. Rather than focusing exclusively on physical limitations, she wanted to create something that supported movement, connection, and a person's sense of agency.
Her approach invites us to reconsider the language we use and the assumptions we make about ourselves and others.
Questioning What We've Been Told
When I asked BE about the people who use The Alinker, her answer made me smile.
“My customers are stubborn people.”
She wasn't describing stubbornness as something negative.
She was talking about people who question what they've been told. People who are willing to challenge authority, reconsider accepted beliefs, and explore possibilities beyond what others have decided is available to them.
This part of our conversation resonated with me.
In my work as a therapist, I often explore how our earliest experiences shape the stories we come to believe about ourselves.
Some of these stories help us navigate the world. Others can leave us feeling disconnected from our own needs, values, and sense of Self.
When we become curious about these beliefs, we create space to consider something different.
Curiosity creates choice. And choice creates change.
